ABOUT VAIL

Vail: Colorado's Playground!

The area in and around Vail, Colorado is a vacationer's Valhalla. Long known for some of the best skiing in the entire world, Vail, and its neighbors in nearby Summit County, is also a great place for a summer respite. A Vail vacation can include activities like fishing, golfing, hiking, boating, ice skating, snow boarding, and even a lazy float down one of the area's rivers.

With mean moguls and groomed cruising runs, Vail is hands down the most prolific ski area in the nation. It is the largest single-mountain ski area in North America. You could ski a week and still not cover the 2000 runs that stem from Vail's three mountain bases. Kids will enjoy Golden Peak (Whippersnapper Mountain). Adventure Ridge, a scenic ride up the Eagle Bahn gondola, has been transformed into an area appealing to non-skiers. There is ski-biking, laser tag, snowshoe rentals and a restaurant which overlooks all the proceedings.

Nearby Beaver Creek ("The Beav" to locals), encompassing the three base villages of Beaver Creek, Arrowhead, and Bachelor Gulch, was the original site of the 1976 Olympic Games. Experts flock to a run ominously named "Bird of Prey", supposedly as tough as any at Vail. The area has a European feeling due to the intertwining nature of the mountains and the chalet style buildings that line the streets.

More skiing can be found at nearby Breckenridge, Vail's eastern neighbor. Breckenridge is owned by Vail, and the resort's popularity has taken off in recent years. 1600 acres connect 4 different mountains giving visitors varying degrees of difficulty. "Peak 9" is for hardcore black-diamond searchers. The restaurants offer incredible views of Blue River Valley below.

Also in the area, Copper Mountain Resort has 2300 acres of trails catering to skiers of all skill levels. The mountain is divided into left and right sections, so it is easy for beginning or novice skiers to stay on the correct side. Advanced skiers have their choice of harrowing runs, and beginners and intermediate skiers will find gradual slopes of varying terrain.

Keystone Resort has snow making capability that allows it to open in late October, weeks earlier than neighboring resorts. Night skiing offers visitors the opportunity to ski up to 16 hours a day. The mountain has long been known as catering to beginner and intermediate skiers, but the slopes on North Peak will delight the more advanced skier. The Mahre Training Center, run by Olympians Phil and Steve Mahre, is known as one of the best in the country.

In addition to being close to all the skiing and outdoor activities, the picturesque town of Silverthorne offers some excellent shopping opportunities for those folks who are searching out a bargain in the mountains. The outlet mall has over 80 stores selling everything from designer clothing to hiking and camping gear.

When the seasons change, and summer is upon us, Vail transforms into an oasis of summer fun. Golfers will want to try the loop at Beaver Creek Resort Golf Club. This Robert Trent Jones design makes full use of the hills and valleys of the nearby White River National Forest. Copper Ridge Golf Course boasts the highest elevation of any PGA loop in the country. This Perry Dye design offers great views of the Tenmile Range.

Anglers will want to cast a line in Gore Creek. This river originates near the Red Buffalo Pass and is swimming with rainbow, brook, brown, and cutthroat trout. Nearby Dillon Reservoir is the focal point of Summit County. Also a boating haven, the reservoir is stocked with small kokanee salmon, brook, and cutthroat trout.

A summer trip to the Vail area would be incomplete without venturing out in the surrounding countryside for either a strenuous test, or an easy-does-it hike in the wilderness. The 1.4 mile hike around Masontown Trail is fun for the whole family. It starts in Frisco, in Summit County, and climbs up the lower reaches of Mt. Royal. Many old mining sites line the path of the forested slopes. Intermediate hikers may enjoy the easy 3.5 mile hike from Bighorn Creek to the "Bighorn Hilton," an old homesteader's cabin. This trek is less steep than most around Vail. More experienced hikers will want to give Argentine Pass a go. The short, but very difficult trail meanders to the summit along the Continental Divide. Your trip will be hugely rewarded with amazing views of the surrounding Sawatch Range.

Vail is a winter and summer wonderland. Ski the same slopes that hosted world champions. Float down the Eagle or Colorado Rivers. Venture out on horseback through the winding trails. Soar over the mountains and valleys in a hot air balloon. Sip on hot chocolate as you warm your toes by a toasty fire while looking out over the snow covered mountains. However you choose to spend your time in the Vail area, you can be sure that it will be a vacation well spent!
